Wrenn to host coaching clinic, with Danny Ford among speakers
As a high school and college coach, Clyde Wrenn went to every coaching clinic he could. Now he’s decided he’d hold his own.
He thought he’d call six coaches and figured he’d get three to agree to take part and then he’d call six more and get one or two toward his goal of six coaches.
“Well,” he said, “I called six and got all six to do it.”
Headlining the “talking football clinic” will be former Clemson University head coach Danny Ford, ex-Air Force head coach Fisher DeBerry and Ellis Johnson, South Carolina’s new defensive coordinator.
Also taking part in the May 3 clinic at Seawell’s in Columbia will be Clemson linebacker coach David Blackwell as well as Buddy Pough and Bobby Bentley, head coaches at South Carolina State and Presbyterian.
The clinic, which will cost $40, is designed for coaches at the high school, junior high and recreational level, Wrenn said.
“But really it’s for anybody that’s interested in coaching football, and I don’t care if the fans want to come,” said Wrenn, a former Clemson assistant and one-time USC assistant athletic director.
Each coach will have a 45-minute session during the clinic. Wrenn said Ford will talk about “having fun and winning” while DeBerry will discuss what football has taught him.
There will also be X-and-O work as well. Pough will go over the wing-T offense, and Bentley will talk about the spread attack. Johnson will go over secondary coverage while Blackwell will talk about stunts and defensive schemes, Wrenn said.
“Someone asked me why I was doing this. I said I just love football and want to stay involved,” Wrenn said. “I hope it helps. Some guys will listen to them. Some guys will come to get autographs and pictures. I just hope it’ll be a learning experience.”
