Cullen Harper flew to Indianapolis, Ind., today to begin the process of erasing doubts about his viability as a potential NFL quarterback.
Harper, the starting quarterback at Clemson University the past two seasons, has been working in Pensacola, Fla., for the past month with former coach and quarterback Mike Kruczek.
"It’s a different kind of a workout than you do at school,"
he said. "It’s very position and Combine specific training.’’
Harper added a few pounds of muscle and worked on the technical stuff with Kruczek, who played at Boston College and in the NFL then coached for Florida State, Central Florida and the Arizona Cardinals.
"He’s taught me a lot about football in a short time,"
Harper said.
Listed by Scouts Inc., on ESPN.com No. 11 out of the 20 and No. 15 overall by Frank Cooney's NFL Draft Scout, Harper is lumped by Todd McShay of Scouts with the other seniors as "one of the worst"
group in NFL draft history.
"I know what I need to work on, and I’ve been working extremely hard, so all I have to do is go up to Indianapolis and present myself the way I’m capable of doing and hopefully people will like what they see,"
he said.
"Bottom line is if you’re not a good football player you wouldn’t be in this position.’’
Joining Harper at the Combine are five Clemson teammates – safety Michael Hamlin, running back James Davis, receiver Aaron Kelly, safety Chris Clemons and defensive tackle Dorell Scott.
Six players from South Carolina and one from Furman are among the more than 300 invited by the NFL to participate.
