Clemson Tigers, arriving for Orange Bowl, receive the royal treatment
The first thing Clemson football players noticed as they disembarked from their charter flight at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport were two colorful buses, each wrapped with a bigger-than-life photograph of coach Dabo Swinney and his Tigers.“That’s a big bus! Golly!’’ said amazed cornerback Coty Sensabaugh, a senior from Kingsport, Tenn., who, like many of his teammates, approached the buses for a closer inspection. Then they noticed the long orange carpet that led to those buses. One by one, the handsomely dressed Atlantic Coast Conference champions walked down that orange path like college royalty. Orange Bowl Committee members greeted them with oranges and black nylon backpacks with OB souvenirs. “That’s when you really know you achieved something in life, when you get to walk on the carpet,’’ 6-6, 255-pound senior defensive end Kourtnei Brown said. The No. 14 Tigers (10-3) meet the No. 23 West Virginia Mountaineers (9-3) at 8:30 p.m. Jan. 4 at Sun Life Stadium. OBC chief executive officer Eric Poms said the BCS matchup is within 1,000 tickets of being a sellout — though many of those seats could be empty. Each team is required to purchase the tickets they haven’t sold from their allotment of 17,500. The Post and Courier of Charleston, S.C., reported Sunday that Clemson had sold “roughly half’’ of its allotment.Poms said he was “fired up’’ to get festivities under way. “Two great traditions, two great programs on the rise and two great institutions that bring a lot of economic development to South Florida,’’ Poms said.Swinney couldn’t stop smiling. He said it was 34 degrees and raining when he left Clemson. “This is an awesome reward for a long year,’’ Swinney said. “We’re coming to win. That’s our objective. We’ve got a good plan in place.’’Swinney said his Tigers arrived two days before West Virginia because he released them for Christmas on Dec. 22, rather than Christmas Eve. “You can only take so much time off, so we needed to get back going today. It made more sense to come down here as opposed to bringing everybody back to Clemson, because we have a lot of people from down this way.’’One player who didn’t make it is second-leading receiver DeAndre Hopkins, who sustained a “mild concussion,’’ according to a Clemson release, in an auto accident Tuesday morning on his way to the bus in Clemson that took the team to the airport.Swinney said he hopes Hopkins will join the team, “but, it is too soon to speculate one way or another on his status for the game.’’Clemson will stay at the Hyatt Regency Weston Bonaventure until it moves Thursday into its official OB hotel, the Westin Diplomat in Hollywood. The Tigers practice at Nova Southeastern University beginning Dec. 30. All other practices are closed to the media.
