The Samford football program has signed three transfers from Division I Football Bowl Subdivision schools, head coach Pat Sullivan announced on Tuesday.
Samford has signed Matt Malouf, a quarterback from Memphis, Jeff Ogren, a wide receiver from Clemson and J.D. Lott, a tight end from LSU.
Malouf (6-2, 212, QB, RS-So., Greenwood, Miss./Memphis) was redshirted in 2006 at Memphis. In 2007, he saw action in 12 games for the Tigers. He completed 7-of-12 passes for 46 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed 38 times for 166 yards and three touchdowns last year for Memphis.
In high school, Malouf played two seasons at Oxford High School, after playing his first two seasons at Pillow Academy in Greenwood, Miss. He was the OHS team’s captain in 2005, and he led squad to a Region 2 4-A championship that season, going undefeated in the regular season for the first time ever. He passed for 2,234 yards and 21 touchdowns, completing 135-of-247 passes as a senior, and also rushed for 674 yards and nine scores.
Malouf was named Player of the Year by several publications, including the Tupelo Daily Journal and the Oxford Eagle. He participated in the Mississippi-Alabama All-Star Game, and was ranked 52nd in the nation by Scout.com and 19th in the Rivals.com Mississippi preseason Top 30.
Ogren (6-2, 200, WR, RS-So., Tuscaloosa, Ala./Clemson) spent the last two seasons at Clemson. After being redshirted in 2006, he saw action in four games last season for the Tigers. He caught one pass for eight yards as a redshirt freshman last season.
In his high school career at American Christian Academy in Tuscaloosa, Ogren was named first-team All-State as both a junior and a senior, the only two years he played in high school. He caught 71 passes for over 1,500 yards and 17 touchdowns as a senior and 62 passes for 1,325 yards and 18 scores as a junior. He also averaged 40.0 yards on 23 punts.
Lott (6-4, 227, TE, RS-So., Hoover, Ala./LSU) was redshirted in 2006 at LSU. He spent the 2007 season on the scout team for the national champion Tigers. He was a member of the 2007 SEC Academic Honor Roll.
Lott played both defensive end and linebacker at Briarwood Christian School in Birmingham. He finished his senior season with 48 tackles, seven tackles for a loss, seven sacks and 11 quarterback pressures. He was named All-State, All-Metro and All-County in 2005. He helped Briarwood win the Class 5A state championship in 2003.
Samford opens the 2008 season on Thursday, Aug. 28, when the Bulldogs play host to West Georgia at 7 p.m. at Seibert Stadium.
