Clemson University defensive back Michael Hamlin, Tigers defensive end Ricky Sapp and University of South Carolina linebacker Jasper Brinkley are on the watch list for the Chuck Bednarik Award.
Meanwhile, Tigers running backs James Davis and C.J. Spiller, quarterback Cullen Harper and receiver Aaron Kelly have been named to the Maxwell Award watch list. USC receiver Kenny McKinley also was named to the list.
The Maxwell Award has been presented to the outstanding collegiate football player in America since 1937 and is named in honor of Robert W. “Tiny” Maxwell.
The Chuck Bednarik Award has been presented since 1995 and is named in honor of Chuck Bednarik, a former University of Pennsylvania and Philadelphia Eagle great.
Semifinalists for the Maxwell and Bednarik Awards will be announced in early November and three finalists for each award will be announced Nov. 25.
... Clemson baseball player Kyle Parker has been named a freshman all-American.
The Tigers’ first-year player joined Miami pitcher Chris Hernandez as Atlantic Coast Conference players chosen by Baseball America for its freshman first-team on Monday.
Parker hit over .300 with 14 homers and 50 RBIs this season. His runs driven in were second during the ACC’s regular season. His home runs tied for the second in the league.
Parker is the first Clemson player selected for the team since Brad Chalk and Taylor Harbin were honored in 2005.
Parker is also a quarterback on Clemson’s football team.
