Another honor for Clemson’s Dabo Swinney
When Clemson coach Dabo Swinney greeted Orange Bowl Committee president-elect (and Clemson alum) Ford Gibson at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport this week, the first thing he told Gibson spoke volumes about the magnitude of the Discover Orange Bowl game for the Tigers.“Thirty years, but we made it!’’ Swinney said excitedly.
Swinney added to his accomplishments late Saturday night when he was named the Bobby Dodd Football Bowl Subdivision National Coach of the Year. He is the first Clemson football coach to win such an honor since Danny Ford in 1981. “I’m just the name they put on this trophy,’’ he told reporters before practice Sunday, lauding his coaches and players for making it happen. “It’s a real honor and compliment to our program and the direction we’re heading, and it caps off a good year. I’m really humbled and honored by it.’’The last time No. 14 Clemson played in a major BCS-type bowl was in 1982 (after the 1981 regular season) at none other than the Orange Bowl, where the Tigers defeated Nebraska 22-15 for the national title.“I was 12 and I remember the game well, because Danny Ford was the coach and he’s an Alabama guy and everybody in the whole state of Alabama was watching that game,’’ said Swinney, an Alabama native who lettered three years at Alabama as a wide receiver. “It’s really hard for me to believe that it’s been that long. It’s special to be able to be a part of helping get Clemson back here — that’s really neat from a historical standpoint. “… I can tell you this: With our guys getting a taste of this, hopefully it won’t be 30 years before we get back down here.’’Serious business for MountaineersThere is little time before Wednesday’s game, so it’s time to forget about South Beach and get down to serious business. That’s what West Virginia and coach Dana Holgorsen are thinking at this point. “We’re here practicing a lot, and we’re ready to play,” Holgorsen said before Sunday’s 1-hour 45-minute practice at Barry University.
“We didn’t want to over-practice, but we’re at a point now where the guys are looking at us and saying, ‘Enough is enough. When are we going to play this game?’?’’The Mountaineers don’t really care about whom they are playing, they are just ready to line up and hit. “That’s the thing about bowl games,” Holgorsen said. “You have to enjoy the festivities, but when it’s time to meet, you need to meet. “When it’s time to focus on football, you have to hit the field and you need to be able to eliminate anything else that is going on.” Interpretation: Sorry, guys, New Year’s is over and no more South Beach. • The Mountaineers are still trying to figure out the consequences of the injury to leading running back Dustin Garrison, who sustained a knee injury in a noncontact portion of practice on Friday and will not play Wednesday.Junior Shawne Alston is expected to step in, and freshman Andrew Buie also could contribute. Despite the loss of Garrison, running-backs coach Robert Gillespie remains optimistic. “It doesn’t change anything,” Gillespie said. “Obviously, there are some things that Dustin did better than some of the other guys, but we’re still going to do what we planned on doing.” • Defensive end Will Clarke has his sights set on a 10-win season for the Mountaineers (9-3): “It’s very important,’’ he said. “We play the game to win. It’s no fun losing.”
